Hyperbole and a Half posted again, and everyone needs to read it because:

If you are depressed, it will resonate with you like whoa.

If you are not depressed, it will clarify some stereotypes about depression that need to be said. An explanation like this has been needed for a LONG time.

If you know someone who is depressed, you’ll be better at interacting with them after reading this.

What Keeps Us Alive

What is it that keeps us alive?

We wake up each morning and we go about our days. Some days are happier than others. Some days are exceptionally hard.

On those days - the hard, difficult, sad days - what is that keeps us going?

Too often we’re consumed in our own worries, so much so that we fail to notice when a friend is struggling deeply with the resolve to keep living. And even when we do notice, what can be done?

Love.

We must love each other, and show the genuine concern that we feel for our friends. Kind words, encouragements, and complements go so much further for a depressed person than you can possibly know (unless, of course, you’ve been there).

Love each other, and love yourself. If that’s too much to ask - I know that it can be, sometimes - than remind yourself daily of the people in your life who love you. There is always at least one person who will love you, and that one person is worth living for.

The majority of us have many people who love us deeply - parents, siblings, friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents. Think of them. Think of what you mean to them, and think of what they mean to you.

They love you. You are so deeply cared for.

When you can’t love yourself and continuing feels like a burden that is just too overwhelming, don’t hold that feeling in. Tell someone. Talk to someone who can remind you of the fact that your life has meaning.

If we can learn to live for love, especially showing other people the love that we can offer, that meaning will easily become clear.

It may be cliché (I wish it wasn’t, but the deepest truths often are), but love is strong enough to keep us alive. The love of God, the love of others, and the love of self.

You’re worth it. So is the person sitting next to you, and the person you pass on the sidewalk.

Never forget love.
